Step-by-step setup
1
For under 9: YouTube Kids instead of the regular app

Download YouTube Kids and uninstall the regular YouTube app. Choose the age group "Preschool" (up to 4) or "Younger" (5–8). Enable "Approved content only" in the parent section — your child will only see channels you have explicitly approved.

Most important setting: Disable the search function. Without search, your child can only see YouTube Kids-curated or parent-approved videos — no route into unmoderated areas.

YouTube Kids app → Lock icon → Disable search
2
Disable Autoplay — the most important step

AutoplayAutoplayAutomatic playback of the next video without any user action. A study (2025) confirmed: turning off Autoplay significantly reduces viewing time. That is why it is on by default. is the most powerful addiction-driving mechanism on YouTube. A controlled study (2025) showed: turning off Autoplay significantly reduces viewing time. Disable it on each device individually.

In YouTube Kids: Parent section → Set timer (max. 30–45 min/day for school-age children). The time limit appears as a friendly reminder, not a hard lock.

YouTube → Profile picture → Settings → Autoplay → Off YouTube Kids → Lock → Set timer
3
Set up Google Family Link (from age 9)

Set up a Google child account via Family Link. In YouTube, choose the content level "Explore" (recommended up to around age 12) — less restrictive than YouTube Kids, but without explicit content. Family Link allows screen time limits per app and daily activity reports.

For ages 9–12: Content level "Explore". For ages 13–15: "Explore more". Children from age 13 may want to manage the account themselves — have that conversation.

families.google.com → Create child account → Choose YouTube content level
4
Pause watch & search history

The algorithm builds its profile from watch history. Pausing history breaks the personalisation spiral — and with it the rabbit-hole effect. With history paused, YouTube has no usage data and recommends neutral rather than escalating content.

Also: Set auto-delete to 3 months — shorter is better.

myaccount.google.com → Data & Privacy → YouTube history → Pause
5
Disable personalised ads

YouTube builds a detailed advertising profile from 80 billion user signals every day. Disable personalised ads in My Ad Centre — your child will then see contextual rather than behaviour-based advertising.

For EEA users: since March 2024, Google requires explicit consent to link YouTube data with other Google services. This consent can be withdrawn at any time.

myaccount.google.com → Data & Privacy → My Ad Centre → Turn off
Common bypass tricks
⚠ How children bypass YouTube restrictions
Opening regular YouTube via a browser instead of the app — restrictions only apply in the app
Disabling Restricted Mode in browser settings themselves (possible on mobile devices)
Creating a second Google account without child protection — age is not verified
Using a friend's device or school Wi-Fi where Family Link does not apply
VPN apps bypass regional restrictions and filters
