Download YouTube Kids and uninstall the regular YouTube app. Choose the age group "Preschool" (up to 4) or "Younger" (5–8). Enable "Approved content only" in the parent section — your child will only see channels you have explicitly approved.
Most important setting: Disable the search function. Without search, your child can only see YouTube Kids-curated or parent-approved videos — no route into unmoderated areas.

In YouTube, choose the content level "Explore" (recommended up to around age 12) — less restrictive than YouTube Kids, but without explicit content. Family Link allows screen time limits per app and daily activity reports.
For ages 9–12: Content level "Explore". For ages 13–15: "Explore more". Children from age 13 may want to manage the account themselves — have that conversation.
