Securing
Instagram

Meta's own research confirms: Instagram harms the body image of 1 in 3 teenage girls — and the algorithm amplifies this deliberately. Here is what you as a parent need to know and do.

🚫
No Instagram under 13. The minimum age is 13. Instagram is neither designed nor suitable for younger children.
💡
For younger children: YouTube Kids with an active child profile offers age-appropriate content with genuine parental controls.
⚠️
Instagram is only permitted from age 13. Age is not verified. If your child has a secret account, address this directly.
🪞
Body-image algorithm
Meta's own research (leaked 2021): Instagram worsens body image issues for 1 in 3 teenage girls. The algorithm deliberately shows more diet-related content when users engage with such posts.
Endless scroll without a stop
Instagram is deliberately designed to keep users scrolling for as long as possible. Teenagers spend an average of over 50 minutes per day on the platform.
💬
DMs from strangers
Strangers can send message requests. These land in a separate inbox — parents often don't know it exists.
🎯
Targeted advertising from age 13
Teenager accounts also receive targeted advertising. Meta received a €405 million GDPR fine for its handling of minors' data.
Step-by-step setup
1
Check Teen Account status
In 2024, Meta introduced Teen Accounts with automatic restrictions: private profile, restricted messages, less sensitive content. Check whether the account is set up as a Teen Account.
Settings → Account → Teen Account settings
2
Set up parental supervision
Use Instagram's parental supervision feature to set time limits, restrict content, and receive a weekly usage summary.
Settings → Parents and Teens → Parental Supervision
3
Set a real time limit with a passcode
Instagram's own reminder is just a nudge — not a real limit. Set a passcode-protected limit at the operating system level using Screen Time.
iOS: Settings → Screen Time → App Limits → Instagram
4
Set the account to private
With a private account, only approved followers can see posts. New follower requests must be confirmed manually.
Settings → Privacy → Private Account: On
5
Restrict messages from strangers
Disable message requests from people your child does not follow.
Settings → Messages → Restrict message requests
6
Reduce sensitive content
Instagram can automatically filter out certain categories of sensitive content (diets, body image).
Settings → Suggested Content → Sensitive Content: Less
How teenagers bypass the controls
Many teenagers have one "official" account for parents and a secret "Finsta" (fake Instagram) under a different name. What helps: building trust — this is almost impossible to prevent technically.
Instagram's own time limit reminder can simply be tapped away. What helps: set a passcode-protected Screen Time limit at the operating system level.
  • Changed attitude towards their own body; talk about dieting
  • Comparisons with influencer bodies or lifestyles
  • Mood drops after intensive Instagram use
  • Secrecy while scrolling; quickly turning the screen away
  • Sleep deprivation due to late-night use
